Cool Tour - Toronto [Blessthefall Feature]
Venue : Sound Academy
Bands Playing : As I Lay Dying, Between The Buried And Me, Underoath, Blessthefall, Cancer Bats, Architects & War Of Ages.
Show Date : July 17th, 2010
Cool Tour is here ! This lineup helped deem this tour as the must-see hardcore show of the summer. Doors opened at 4pm, but to my surprise there wasn't many people at the venue for doors, but as it got later into the evening the Sound Academy became packed.
I went into the show with the intentions of doing a review on the whole tour, but instead I decided to change it to a review of the most underrated band on the tour : Blessthefall [Beau Bokan - vox; Eric Lambert - guitar; Matt Traynor - drums; Mike Frisby - guitar & Jared Wrath - bass].
This hardcore band is from Arizona with the exception for Mr.Beau Bokan, who is from California and joined the band after Craig Mabbit parted ways with the band back in 2008 half way through one of their tours. They have grown a lot and matured together as a band throughout the years and definitely have not been given the credit that they deserve.
I have seen the band play before when they came here on their headlining tour "The Bangover Tour" back in April, but to see the reaction the crowd gave them as an opener was an experience! Out of all the bands on Cool Tour, Bokan had no problem jumping into the crowd, jumping over the photographers in the photo pit and getting circle pits started. Most of the bands that were opening on this tour had limited their set to just staying on stage and talking to the crowd without any contact interaction, so to see how the crowd went nuts over the Bokan going into the crowd shows how much he likes to get people rallied up. It was nice to see everyone headbanging and having a good time during their set even if they didn't know who Blessthefall was, and that in my opinion is something hard to achieve as most of the time openers only get the response of clapping with no one really rocking out to the music.
Blessthefall has a lot of great tunes such as 'To Hell & Back' and 'Last One Left'. They are different from other hardcore bands because Wrath's screaming compliments Bokan's voice as opposed to some bands that chose to only have mostly screaming go on in their band leaving people to wonder what the song is about / what they are saying. Musically, this band flows together with each part complimenting the other in it's own way which leaves people in awe about what they have just heard. With that being said, this is why they were deemed to be the most underrated band on the tour.
If you haven't had the chance to check out Blessthefall, I suggest that you do so if you enjoy bands such Underoath, As I Lay Dying & Bring Me To The Horizon.

One Republic - Toronto
Venue : Phoenix Concert Theatre
Date: July 15th 2010.
OneRepublic is a self proclaimed "genreless" band, and I can see why. Their sound is different from anything I have ever heard and it's pretty amazing to see how they build their sound around Ryan Tedder's voice. They are from Colorado Springs, CO & started their music career in 2002 and quickly became the #1 unsigned band on myspace, but it wasn't until they released their debut album "Dreaming Out Loud" that they got recognized by the public and not just their myspace fans with their hit single "Apologize" .
I was very fortunate to catch these guys playing while in Toronto. The venue was very small making the experience with them more intimate. It was nice to see that the crowd was all ages and know that OneRepublic is able to captivate a wide range of fans. With this being said, I saw something I have never seen before at a show.. The wide variety of ages; it ranged from parents coming with their younger kids, grandparents with their grandchildren, teens & everyone in between! Now with a big difference in age groups at the show I wasn't exactly sure what to expect in terms of how the crowd would interact with the band, but boy I definitely wasn't expecting what I got.. A LOT OF JUMPING! Tedder made sure to incorporate the fans with their set by jumping into the crowd to get everyone going, changing lyrics to incorporate 'Toronto' & getting everyone to sing along, so no questions asked when Tedder asked everyone to start jumping up and down for one of their songs literally EVERYONE in the crowd did! The floor was shaking and it felt like the floor was going to cave in, but it sure was something awesome to experience.
This band is very different than most, they have violins & cellos incorporated into their music and all the band members were able to multi-task instead of having people come on and off the stage for just those parts and they also are able to build their sound around Tedder's voice to compliment every aspect of it.
If you haven't heard of OneRepublic, I suggest you check out their myspace as you have been missing out! They kind of remind me of the Rocket Summer, which makes sense since he opened for them earlier this year. Also OneRepublic will be heading out with U2 this year so if you want a chance to catch them out on the road you can check their new tour dates!

Change in Hey Monday Plans & Line Up for AP Tour Announced
Hey Monday has released a statement saying that their release is no longer a CD but an EP with a follow up early next year. The band said :
"Hey everyone!
I have some news about our August 17th release. Instead of a full length album, we will be releasing "Beneath It All" as an EP instead, and then early next year we will release an album to follow it up! We were definitely bummed when we first found out, but on the brightside, we'll have a lot more music for you than originally planned and will be on the road for a longer stretch to see all of you! I wish we had known that the full length would be coming a little later before telling everyone about it, but there's nothing we can do about it now. However, I'm pretty certain you guys are gonna love it all!
For anyone that already pre-ordered Beneath It All at heymondaymusic.com, your credit cards have not, and will not ever, be charged since it's a different package now. However, we DO have a new pre-order up at www.gomerch.com/heymonday/preorder, so please head over there to get the goods! For the sake of clarity, if you already pre-ordered Beneath it All and still want the pre-order, you will need to place another order on the new site (as all old pre-orders cannot and will not be processed due to the new pricing). Kinda annoying, I know :\
We are very happy to give you yet another brand new song clip for a song that we've been playing on Warped this summer right now! The song is called "I Don't Wanna Dance" - listen to the clip right here http://bit.ly/idwdclip and get ready for the video premiere next Thursday on MTV!
Love you all and see you soon!
- Cassadee"
In other news, the AP Tour line up has been announced & it is a lot different sound wise than we are used to. This Fall AP tour will be taking a more hardcore approach. The lineup consists of Bring Me To The Horizon, Emarosa, The Polar Bear Club & August Burns Red.

The Vans Warped Tour 2010 - Toronto
The day that most of us have been waiting for all year finally came, and went even faster than expected. Just incase you have no idea what I am talking about I’ll fill you in: Warped Tour 2010. This is the third year that the Toronto date was held at Arrow Hall (in Mississauga, ON by the airport) on July 9th .
Warped Tour carries many bands and is a full day festival that goes across the United States and portions of Canada. This year had a lot of big names playing the main stage such as Sum 41, We The Kings, Motion City Soundtrack & The All – American Rejects, while a lot of other well known bands played the smaller stages such as The Rocket Summer, Breathe Carolina, Four Year Strong & The Cab. Warped Tour is also a good way to learn about newer artists in the scene such as Never Shout Never & Artist vs Poet. Its festivals like these that help widen the crowd’s taste of music and help them find bands that they might not have taken the time to listen to beforehand.
The weather for this year started out really rainy but stopped as it got closer to the afternoon, and after that it was smooth sailing with the sun and a cool breeze ( a big relief from last year as it was scorching hot outside with no breeze ). With nice weather in place, it meant that the chances that fans were able to interact with their favorite artists were greater as the rain would not cancel the meet & greets and signings that were supposed to take place. On a side note; it was also nice to see the tour’s creator Kevin Lyman wandering around the press area thanking people for covering his tour.
This year was not too bad set time wise, as the tour kicked off with We The Kings playing on the main stage at around 11:15 (doors opened at 11), and all the other big acts were spread out as opposed to last year when many fans were upset because of slow security, long lines and not being able to get into the venue on time to catch big bands such as The Devil Wears Prada. Following this, the bigger names such as Sum41, Motion City Soundtrack and the All – American Rejects did not hit the stage until after 4pm, so it worked out if you were only going to see the big bands on the main stage. The smaller stages such as the Glamour Kills stage & the AP Advent stage were filled with a good mix of well known and unknown bands and have them alternating what was going on, on each stage (eg. There was always a well known playing on one stage and an unknown playing on the other; giving people the option to always be entertained instead of just standing around and waiting for the bands that they wanted to see).
Not only is Warped Tour all about great music, but it’s also about doing things for a great cause. Some charities that were on the warped tour this year included To Write Love On Her Arms (a suicide prevention program), Keep A Breast Foundation(breast cancer research), Music Saves Lives (blood donation drive – you donate blood before the show and get special access to stand on the stage and watch bands perform + front of the line meet & greet access for all the signings they have going on that day) & Skate4Cancer (brings awareness to different types of cancers & raises money). This year also included a surprise, Tyson Ritter from The All – American Rejects stood by his merch table for a portion of the day getting donations for Haiti (http://donthateonhaiti.tumblr.com/) . This was a great idea because it gives fans an opportunity to meet him and they can help out a good cause!
With all this being said, the Vans Warped Tour 2010 – Toronto was a success! And if you missed out on the Toronto date, try and catch another one near you as the Warped Tour goes on all summer long and is definitely a must see event of the summer!
3 Bands YOU Need To Know On The Vans Warped Tour
It’s that time of year again! The Vans Warped Tour has hit the road with a bunch of amazing bands! I attended the Toronto date on July 9th and have come up with 3 acts that are a must see! They get down & dirty with the fans AND they make sure to give you a memorable performance full of interaction with the crowd (something that you don't see go on as much anymore at shows).
First up we have The Rocket Summer. Bryce Avary has done it again! Giving fans an amazing show that is memorable by getting involved with the fans & the crowd. He’s from Dallas/ Fort Worth , Texas and has been active in the music scene since 1999. You would think that with only about a half hour set, you can’t expect too much of a performance, but with Avary everything is done to it’s best. His upbeat tunes makes the whole set like an awesome dance party & big sing along. Everytime I see him live, he finds another way to blow you away making his performance better than the last (was that even possible?!). His current album, “ Of Men And Angels” is in stores now and you can catch him on the whole warped tour on the AP Advent stage, and if you are already a fan of The Rocket Summer be sure to stop by his tent and see when he is doing a signing!
Myspace || Website || Twitter
Next up we have Artist vs Poet. There’s 5 guys in this band from Dallas, Texas (Tarcy Thomason [vocals], Craig Calloway [guitar&vocals], Joe Westbrook[drums], Joe Kirkland [guitar] & Jason Dean [bass]). These guys have been in the music scene releasing EP’s since 2007 and their debut album “Favorite Fix” was just released this year. I've honestly been a fan of these guys since they released their self-titled EP back in 2007, but they have ventured here as yet, so by all means this was the set I was most excited to see that day and was not sure what to expect. The band’s sound is very up beat and can get the whole crowd moving, in which they did and Thomason did a great job in getting the crowd involved as he moved around a lot during the set and had no fear in jumping into the crowd and passing the mic off to fans to finish parts of the song. It was nice to see that each fan knew all the lyrics which is great since it was their first time playing a show in Canada! You can catch Artist vs Poet on the Glamour Kills stage on the whole tour this summer!
Myspace || Website || Twitter
Last but not least, another great band that will be on warped tour is Breathe Carolina. These two guys [David Schmitt & Kyle Even] from Denver, Colorado remind me of 3OH3 but with a more power pop / electronica sound. They have been active in the music scene since 2007 and they recently re-released “Hello Fascination” this year as a deluxe edition that is in stores now. I've listened to these guys before, back in 2008 when "It's Classy, Not Classic" came out, but have never had the opportunity to see them live until now. Their warped tour set was filled with water guns, blow up killer whales and a lot of head banging! I mean, who doesn’t love head banging?! It was truly amazing to see how these guys interact with the fans as the experience was different,as opposed to the bands that just come on stage, play and then leave without doing anything interesting in between to get the crowd involved & hyped up. Catch Breathe Carolina on the Warped Tour all summer on the Atlec stage! And if you are already a fan, Breathe Carolina has teamed up with Umbrella Clothing to create a clothing line called "Blush" that is being sold at the Hannah Montana tent, (no, they aren't selling any Hannah Montana shirts but you can't miss that tent!) so be sure to check that out!

Envy On The Coast Calls It Quits
Envy On The Coast have called it quits just months after releasing their sophomore album Low Country. The letter the band wrote to the fans can be read below.
To anyone and everyone who's ever supported us: The day has come to pull down that curtain down. Sal and Jer sat down with Brian and I about a week ago and informed us that they are leaving Envy on the Coast. They explained that they are no longer happy being a part of this, and there was nothing Brian and I could do or say to change that. Because Envy on the Coast was founded upon the musical and personal relationships between the four of us, Brian and I have decided that we would rather move forward rather than finding musicians to replace Sal and Jer.
I can't say I'm all that shocked by this, nor am I upset. At some point in your life, you have to stop saying, "But I never expected this to happen to me!?" For me, that day came when my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. Fortunately, after she beat it, I took with me the knowledge that anything and everything can and will happen to you...and you should welcome those hurdles because they will make you stronger. At the end of the day, some marriages fail, some people win the lottery, and some people get struck by lightening. You can trust someone with every ounce of yourself, but a lot of men are the center of their own universe, and that's something I've learned to cope with. I shouldn't have said I wasn't upset. There are aspects of this whole situation that have upset me, but there's no use in dwelling on that when we have so much to be proud of.
When we started this band, we had no idea what we were doing, nor what we wanted to accomplish. Like most bands, we hopped in a van and vowed to stick together and figure it out along the way. In a very short time frame, we decided we wanted to preserve integrity, credibility, and put our art at the forefront above all else. We knew turning down certain opportunities would sometimes leave us broke and maybe regretful, for some of us, but we knew it wasn't within our capability to compromise. Sure, we did a lot of things we were apprehensive about at first, but on 'Lowcountry', our most recent effort, I can proudly say we made something that was 100% us. We played ball for a few years, but not on that record; we did what we wanted. We wrote the songs we wanted to write, the way wanted to write them. We shot the video we wanted with the creative individuals who we entrusted to do it with. We did it all our way. I don't care how many copies it sold, because I've got a lot of acquaintances who have sold a shit-ton more records than I may ever sell, but they don't sleep as well as I do at night.
I've toured with the flavors of the week. I've watched teenagers place "band dudes" up on pedestals, not for the music they make, but for the aura they omit. I've seen the looks in our fans eyes. I know that this little band meant something to you. I know that all of our sacrifice, all of our struggle, and all of our hard work was worth it. I know that we didn't have to tweet what the fuck we were doing every hour of the day in order to stay connected with our fans. They stayed connected to us through our music, regardless of where we were or what we were doing. You understood. You got it.
Brian and I decided a long time ago that we wanted to be artists. That can mean a lot of things, but to us it just means we want to keep making art and music together. And that's what we plan on doing. I doubt anyone's mentally ready to swallow "what's next" yet, so we'll just leave it at that for now. In the coming weeks, we'll be announcing our three final shows and together, we will celebrate the the death of something beautiful. Thank you all for being a part of this.
-Ryan
"What if there's no more fun to have? And all I got is what I've had? What if I have forgotten how? Cut my losses and get out now Get out...right now. There's something stronger than me. There's something I don't want to see. A new thing growing in me." - Mike Patton, Faith No More "Get Out"

Matthew Leone Beaten Up After Stopping A Domestic Attack
Madina Lakes bassist was severely beaten while walking out to meet a friend for drinks. He saw a man beating up his wife and decided to intervene being the amazing human he is. According to Madina Lake's Tumblr the guy was double Matthew's size and after he got the man to stop for a bit, and called the cops the man attacked him and then he & his wife left Matthew unconscious on the street. He is currently suffering from a broken jaw, broken nose & fractured skull. An update through Alternative Press has been released and can be found here .It's good to hear that Matthew is getting better and the supposed suspect has been caught by police and hopefully get the punishment that he deserves.
Please keep Matthew in your prayers. What he did was very heroic and I for one do not know many people who would risk their own life to do what is right and stop to help someone in need. Its terrible to see that this is how people are like now.. beating and abusing each other.. What do you guys think of this situation?
